Welcome to Ipoh!

The city is famous for her streets and Cantonese cuisine. Below is a personal guide to restaurants I’ve fallen in love with over the years and, as far as I know, I still maintain the standards. We appreciate the feedback from locals and welcome comments below.

Know that you are spoiled by this beautiful city choice. What and where you eat should be guided by what you feel like eating at a particular moment and accessibility. When observing coffee shop stalls, your eyes are also your best guide. It’s great to eat, but some foods can also be ordered through the glove. Please note the recommendations from Google and locals about the location.

Nga Choi Kai – Bean Sprout Chicken

This is a very famous dish in Ipoh. The smooth Ipoh Kuay Teow, soup or dry, comes with juicy chicken and plump bean sprouts. There are also popular aspects such as chicken legs, gravel, liver and pork meatballs. I recommend Sanma Chicken Rice at https://g.co/kgs/1ak1v2q. The queue is long and it may be best to go during off-peak hours. It’s also good for Take Aways. Other well-known places include Cowan Street Ayam Tauge and Lou Wong.

Kai watches Horu’s fun
This is another popular dish, sometimes confused with bean sprout chicken. They are very similar. For this, Quai Theo is served in a stunning soup of delicious shrimp with chives, shrimp slices and chicken strips. Famous places for this include Loke Wood Kee, Kong Heng Restaurant, Thean Chun (next to Kong Heng), Moon De Moon and Curry Keng.

Roar wooi Kee -26, Jalan Mustapha al -Bakri, Taman Jubilee, 30300 IPOH, PERAK, Malaysia

Charcoal-fried noodles
This is a favorite of the popular dinner sapporo. Fried charcoal dishes include Wattanghor, Moonlight Holphant (E-Kong Hol), and Hocking Mee. Tuckkey (with branches in KL and Singapore) is famous for this. All of these are very suitable for takeout and can be grabbed for dinner.

White coffee, Chi Chong Hwang, etc.

Ipoh’s white coffee has a unique aroma. It is usually eaten for breakfast and accompanied by Ching Chong’s enjoyment, curry puffs, kaya toast, and more. Older coffee shops in the original town are famous for older coffee shops like Yuan Shan and Sin Yin Loong, but are usually crowded. People at Nextgen have opened SwankyCafes, offering excellent coffee and CCF in a comfortable air-conditioned setting. I recommend Red Mountain Sin Yin Loong. There are many cafes to try. IPOH has something very unique. See this link https://www.traveloka.com/en-my/explore/destination/the-best-white-coffee-in-ipoh/341654

Cantonese ZI Chardish

Ipoh is famous for its unique, tasty, affordable Cantonese jar dishes. There are many good restaurants to choose from. Our favorite is to publish our seafood restaurant at https://goo.gl/maps/kzuu6ljxvs8lffxv5. Try steamed chicken in ginger sauce.
Other favorites include Sun Mar Poh (https://g.co/kgs/ublg4ub), sin hup kee, and more.

Dim Sum

Ipoh’s dim dishes have evolved in its own way, including versions of fried fish bowls and salted egg bread. It’s also very affordable. For example, a plate with 3 siew mai usually costs 5-10 RGT. Try Chooi Yue, Foh San, Sun Kim Aik and more.

Ipoh curry mee

This urban version of Laksa usually doesn’t come with coconut milk and relies on instead of using spices and stocks properly. Xin Guan Fang restaurant’s “Curry Mee at the Police Station” is famous for this, but the queues can be long. Available only in the morning and runs fast. You can try Yee Fatt or Curry Keng.

Kuay Teow and “Liu”
For breakfast and lunch, Ipoh Kuay Teow with “Liu” or Yong Tau Foo is popular. Dai Shu Geok (“Big Tree of Big Tree) Yong Tau Foo is famous. The restaurant also has other food stalls. Location: 652, Jaranking, Pasir Pini

Tauf FA (Soybean Tofu)
Our favorite Tofu FA Stole runs from the pickup truck from 3pm to 6pm. Located on Ipoh Garden East Main Road. Location: https://goo.gl/maps/wpbyq21qefrc3laa

Peanut Soup Dessert (fa sang wu)

Hong Kee Mah Chee serves peanut soup and muahchee from the stall outside the Jalan Queen 550A home.

Indian and Malay cuisine

While cooking outside of canton may not be the focus of a short trip, Ipoh has some great Indian/Muslim eateries that serve nasiganja, rotichanai, banana leaf rice and more. Jalan Yang Khalsam’s Nasi Kandal Ayam Mera @Kedai Kopi Yong Suan is famous.
