Important ingredients
Cabbage: I used green cabbage in the photo, but you can steam other types of cabbage without making any changes to the recipe. Consider Savoy, Napa, Red Cabbage, or pointed cabbage (like HISPI) butter. I’m using Salted Butter and unsalted is fine! Before serving, adjust the salt a little more with a little more salt. Use plant-based butter for your vegan options. Lime: Cabbage and lime are a really great combination, but you can always replace the lemon! Green Onions: Also known as spring onions, these are cooked quickly and help you enjoy the flavor of lime butter.
By the way, it’s great to have a steaming basket! Perfect for this recipe. If you don’t have a steaming basket, don’t worry! Instead, you can make delicious steamed cabbage with Pansteam. We shared how to do either (in a basket) (in a basket) in the recipe below! I hope you love it!

My family loves this simple steamed cabbage! I love the incredibly easy and simple lime butter! If you have it, steamed cabbage will be really easy when you have a steaming basket set in a large pot. That being said, you can make this recipe without one. Instead, you can easily steam the cabbage in a deep frying pan. Add the cabbage right after rinsing under cold water (still wet), add 2 tablespoons of water, pop it on the lid and cook. Be careful with that, and if the pan appears to be dry, add more water.
4 servings
You will need it
Half of medium cabbage, about 1 pound
2 tablespoons of butter
2 teaspoons of lime skin
Green onion, finely sliced
Half of lime juice
Fresh ground black pepper with salt
direction
1Prepare the cabbage: Remove the core and cut the cabbage into quarters. Next, slice each quarter into thin strips about 1/2 inch wide. Add the colander and rinse with cold water.
2Steam the cabbage: If you use it, add the cabbage to a steaming basket set in about 2 inches of water. Alternatively, if you don’t have a steaming basket, add cabbage (still wet from the rinse) and 2 tablespoons of excess water to a deep frying pan.
3Cover with a lid, place the pot or pan on medium high heat, cook until it’s steaming, reduce heat to medium and low and steam for 5-7 minutes. Check it out from time to time to see how soft/soft it is. If the pot or pan is dry, add 1-2 tablespoons of water.
4Make lime butter: While the cabbage is steaming, melt the butter in a pan, add the green onion white, cook for 1 minute, turn off the heat, then stir in the lime crust, pepper and salt. Please put it aside.
5Serve: Toss steamed cabbage with lime butter, add lime juice spritz and season with salt and pepper.
Adam and Joan tips
Storage: Store remaining steamed cabbage in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. It’s normal for it to sit and release a little extra water. What we offer: I love this next to poached salmon, lemon dill baked salmon, crab cake, pulled pork and simple roasted chicken! Nutrition facts shown below are estimates.
