Make your holiday turkey the best it can be with this simple homemade seasoning blend of sage, thyme, rosemary, paprika, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. It’s cozy, flavorful, and delicious with chicken and vegetables all year round.

Flavor: Earthy herbal flavors and aromas, smoky paprika, and a touch of nutmeg create a cozy holiday vibe. Technique: Lightly crush dried rosemary to bring out more flavor. Budget Tip: Look for store brand spices. It’s usually cheaper and tastes the same. Serving Guide: Use approximately 1 tablespoon of seasoning per pound of turkey.

What is turkey seasoning?
Salt: This recipe uses kosher salt, which is coarser than table salt. If you use table salt, we recommend reducing the amount to 1 teaspoon, or skipping it entirely if using this recipe in soups or casseroles. Then add salt directly to the dish. Herbs: This recipe is a perfect blend of dried herbs, lots of sage, a pinch of rosemary, and a dash of thyme, paprika, and black pepper. Optional additions: You can add other spices and seasonings to this recipe, such as garlic powder, oregano, onion powder, and parsley. Add a little cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes for added heat.

How to season turkey
Pat the outside of the turkey dry with paper towels (this will help keep the skin crispy). If the neck and giblets are inside the cavity, remove them. I like to add salt and fresh herbs to the cavity before roasting. Rub the whole bird with melted butter or olive oil. Sprinkle generously with turkey seasoning (recipe below) and rub into turkey skin. Roast in the oven using your favorite turkey recipe or method (we love this roast turkey or spatchcock turkey).

keep seasonings fresh
Store in airtight containers: Use airtight jars, spice containers, or containers that prevent air from entering. Store in a cool, dark place. Avoid heat, sunlight, and moisture as this can cause herbs and spices to deteriorate. A pantry or cupboard is ideal. Avoid Moisture: Don’t scoop seasonings with a wet spoon. Keep away from vapors and liquids. Shelf life: When stored properly, condiments can stay fresh for up to 6 months.

*Kosher salt has large grains. If using table salt, reduce the salt to 1 teaspoon. If you wish, you can also omit salt from the mixture and add salt to each meat or dish as needed. To crush the rosemary, place it in a shallow bowl and use a glass bottom or small measuring cup to crush it.
