quick and easy dinner
I love sharing the recipes I make all the time, but I’ve never thought of sharing them on my blog. This is one of those recipes! One of our favorite bowtie pasta recipes is a creamy tomato pasta dish that’s ready in under 20 minutes. This is a delicious recipe that doesn’t require much effort. My simple creamy sauce is just garlic, canned tomatoes, heavy cream, and parmesan cheese. Adding a little sugar and a healthy dose of salt brings this sauce to life and makes it taste like it’s supposed to. Fresh basil adds a bit of flavor and color for a classic Italian touch.
Main materials needed
You don’t need much to make this bowtie pasta recipe. You can make it in no time using a few convenient commercially available ingredients.

Bowtie Pasta – Also known as farfalle or butterfly pasta. These hold the sauce perfectly and are also a fun pasta shape for kids. Garlic – Delicious garlic to start this dish. Tomatoes – I used a can of diced tomatoes to make this recipe quick and easy. If you are picky, use petit dice. Sugar – This will help cut the acidity of the canned tomatoes. Heavy Cream – Adds creaminess to the sauce. Parmesan Cheese – For the best meltability, use fresh, hand-grated Parmesan cheese. Basil Leaves – Last but not least, basil leaves. Slice it thinly and enjoy its fresh taste.
Bow tie pasta recipe variations
I originally made this bowtie pasta for vegetarians, but even if you’re a meat eater, don’t let that stop you from adding some protein. Here are some ideas:
Italian sausage Smoked sausage Chicken breast or thighs (we recommend rotisserie chicken!) Ground beef
Or, if you want to add more veggies, try wilting some spinach while cooking or slicing some mushrooms and cooking them with garlic. For extra spice, try red pepper flakes, Italian seasoning, or garlic powder.
How to make bow tie pasta
This recipe is perfect for busy weeknights and the whole family will love it. It quickly became a family favorite in this house. See the printable recipe card below for more information, including ingredients and quantities needed.
Step 1: Cook the pasta
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Boil the bow tie pasta until al dente and drain. Let’s set it aside.
Pro tip: Check the package instructions for specific cooking times. Al dente usually takes 2 minutes less than fully cooked.
Step 2: Make the sauce
While the pasta is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the garlic until fragrant. Add sugar, salt, and pepper to the can of diced tomatoes. Simmer gently for 2 minutes.
Pour in the cream and reduce the heat to low. Sprinkle with Parmesan and stir to melt. Taste and adjust seasoning. Depending on how acidic your tomatoes are, you may need more sugar or salt. Usually you’ll need a little bit of both.
Step 3: Top with basil
Add the hot pasta and stir to coat with the Parmesan cream sauce. Add chopped basil and mix. Enjoy hot!

store leftovers
This creamy bowtie pasta recipe is one of our double-winning easy recipes. Not only is it quick and easy to make dinner, but it also saves you money. Just store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4 days! Your sauce may not be as creamy right out of the fridge, but just adding a little water to the bowl or container before microwaving will bring back that “saucy” pasta feel. It works like magic.

We hope you enjoy this easy pasta recipe as much as we enjoy it. You’ll want to make it over and over again, so be sure to add it to your regular rotation. Enjoy the printable recipe card below.

FAQ
You might see farfalle on a box of bow tie pasta. Farfalle means “butterfly” in Italian. It is usually served with creamy sauces, tomato sauces, and hearty meat sauces. If you opt for a creamier sauce instead of my tomato sauce recipe, adding cream cheese, thinly sliced sun-dried tomatoes, and lemon juice would be great.
Short bite-sized pastas such as shells, mini penne pasta, or mezzi (“half”) rigatoni are all great alternatives to farfalle or bow-tie pasta.
absolutely! This creamy bow tie recipe was made with vegetarians in mind. You can also add protein such as ground beef, chicken, smoked sausage or mild Italian sausage.
