Who doesn’t like roasted potatoes? But have you tried making them with an air fryer?
There’s no need to parboil these beauty and their results. It’s crispy and delicious, and takes 20 minutes. This means that the roasted potatoes on these aircraft are the perfect aspect for a quick meal.

Close the overhead image of roasted potatoes stacked in a dark bowl. Sprinkle the potatoes with thyme and salt.

I tried out the air fryer and found the best way to make an air fryer roasted potato without first boiling it in water.

Jump using the three methods and results you tested.

Perboil/steam stage with a foil parcel with an air fryer, remove the foil and fry it in oil. Fail – The potatoes were not steamed in foil, they were vigorously hard (and a bit dry) with thick, chewy skin. I fry the potatoes directly into an air fryer basket and lightly rained on the oil (no parboiling/steaming stage). These were fine. Not too crunchy, but they had nice brown skin and a bit chewy. The interior was wonderful and fluffy. Fry the potatoes in a shallow tray insert in an air fryer basket and lightly rain on the oil (no parboiling/steaming stage). winner! – Fluffy interior, crunchy skin. It’s not as crispy as my oven roasted potatoes, but when it’s short, it still has a crispness and a great exchange.

Types of air fryers

I use a Ninja Max (<-Affiliate Link) Air Fryer, but these instructions apply to drawer style air fryers (not grill style or air fryers with paddles. I haven't tested them with these Hmm. I know from the comments :-))

***A complete recipe with detailed instructions on the recipe card at the end of this post***

Peel off the potatoes and wash them. These are to remove excess starch. This increases the chances that the potatoes will become too brown (before the inside is cooked) and the potatoes will stick to the tray. Tap the dried washes. Add potatoes to a shallow tray insert (see below for more information) to the air fryer basket and drizzle the oil. Shake them to coat. Check the shaking several times until it is golden brown for 20 minutes. Topped with flake-like salt and fresh thyme.

Pro tips

Using a shallow tray insert, ensure that the potatoes come into contact with the oil (instead of the oil that is drained through the holes in the air fryer basket).

Tray insert

I use an 8-inch pizza bread insert from this accessory set (< - affiliate link) on Amazon. This is compatible with my Ninja Max.

? FAQ

Why use tray inserts on air fryer roasted potatoes?

To roast potatoes in the oven, the potatoes need to be roasted in a fatty roasting tray. The potatoes sit on hot fat. This helps to give potatoes a “crunchy shell.” When you try to roast potatoes with an air fryer in a regular basket (with holes in them), the extra fat you add will be drained from the holes, so the potatoes are not in contact with hot fat. There is only a small amount of fat to pour into the skin coating. This will be brown roasted potatoes. , the hot oil is absorbed deep into the skin, resulting in thick crunchy skin.

Can I skip the tray insert and add it directly to the air fryer basket?

yes of course. The skin is not very crunchy, but the potatoes turn brown. Also, because it is low in fat, it has low calorie and fat content.

Shouldn’t you hit the potatoes first?

This recipe is to make quick roasted potatoes. I prioritized speed and simplicity over getting the ultimate crunch. If you have more time, yes, you can pave the potatoes. For information on this, see the Notes section of the recipe card below.

How much roasted potatoes should you cook in an air fryer?

Unless the potatoes are too large, you should cook them in an air fryer in about 20 minutes. When squeezed, they should be crispy and golden and soft. If not, shake the air fryer basket and stir fry for a few more minutes.

Peel and chopped potatoes for 8-9 minutes – until softened on the edges. Drain and gently lift the edges up even more. In addition to the air fryer tray insert, place it on the air floor with oil. Cook according to the recipe above, but reduces cooking time by 5 minutes.
