If you love chocolate, this is the cake to make. It starts with the mix, but you never know.
Why you’ll love this devil’s food cake
This is a really easy recipe. It starts with a cake mix, but takes it up a few levels. The addition of chocolate chips makes this cake amazing. Eating a bite of chocolate chip with cake…it’s really delicious. Top with caramel frosting. This is incredible. It’s moist and full of flavor, and you’ll be addicted to it once you take a bite!
Swap – Pudding Mix
I want to make this cake with a mix that includes pudding, but I couldn’t find it last time. So I bought a package of instant chocolate pudding and added it to the mix. The mix ended up being a little thick so I thought it might not work, but it did and we all agreed it worked. If you can’t find the mix with the pudding that comes with it, it’s optional. Or you can leave out the pudding and this cake will still be delicious. This cake can also be made in 9X13.

tips
You don’t need to add frosting to this recipe, but I think it would be great. You can easily make it by just sprinkling it with powdered sugar. You could also make this cake in a 9 x 13 cake and pour the caramel frosting over the top of the cake, but I double the frosting recipe.

chocolate chip devil’s food cake
This devil’s food cake starts with a mix, then adds chocolate chips and a delicious caramel frosting.
1 minute caramel frosting
1/2 cup light brown sugar1/2 cup regular sugar1/4 cup evaporated milk1/4 cup butter or margarine1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence
Place cake mix in a large bowl and add sour cream, eggs, oil, and milk. Mix well with a mixer.
Mix chocolate chips and nuts. Spray a bundt pan with cooking spray. Add cake mixture to pan.
Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 55 to 60 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes before removing from the mold. Allow to cool completely before adding caramel frosting.
1 minute caramel frosting instructions
Add all ingredients except vanilla to the pot and bring to a boil. Cook for 1 minute, remove and add vanilla extract.
Mix with a mixer for about 2 minutes, and it will thicken as it cools. Pour over cake. I use a small pitcher to pour the frosting onto the cake.
If it is too difficult to pour, add a little milk until the desired consistency is achieved.
If you can’t find a cake mix with pudding in it, you can add a 3.2-ounce box of instant chocolate pudding. The mix will be a little thicker, but I did this last time I made it and it worked fine. I think it’s okay even without pudding.
