This simple sauce is made from canned tomatoes and a handful of seasonings are boiled until they are rich and flavorful. This classic red sauce is always a victory!

Simple Marinara Sauce in a Pot

Flavor: This fresh and healthy sauce has a balanced tomato base with garlic, herbs and subtle sweetness. Skill Level: This sauce is easy to make and uses simple everyday ingredients. Most of them are on hand. Don’t be fooled by simplicity. It’s tasty. Serving Suggestions: You can use homemade marinara sauce to swap tomato sauce or prepare lasagna in most recipes. Double or triple the batch and freeze for last-minute recipes!

Marinara sauce is thinner than spaghetti sauce, with little addition. Spaghetti sauces tend to be thicker, less skinny and bolder.

Ingredient Tips for Marinara Sauce

Tomato: Use a combination of crushed tomatoes and canned tomatoes and tomato paste. It costs just a little, but I love the fresh flavor that San Marzano tomatoes adds to the sauce. You can peel off fresh tomatoes and add them. Vegetables: Onions and garlic add flavor, while finely chopped carrots add sweetness to balance the tomato tart flavor. Sugar: Depending on the tomato brand, this recipe may not require sugar. If the sauce is a tart, add a pinch or two. However, you can completely skip sugar if necessary. Seasonings: Add dried seasonings (such as DIY Italian seasonings) before simmering in step 5. You should add fresh herbs just before serving. A splash of some red chili peppers or sriracha gives a little pep to the homemade marinara! Variations: Sneak into shredded zucchini, natural sweeteners and nutritional boosters, with a bit of puree pumpkin or squash. Alternatively, add ground beef and turn this into a hearty homemade spaghetti sauce.

How to make marinara sauce

Fry the onion, carrots and garlic in oil until soft (the complete recipe below). Add the whole tomato and break it with a spoon. Add the remaining ingredients in ½ cup water and simmer until thick. Stir with basil before serving.

Please save it later!

Marinara sauce lasts for about 5 days in a closed container refrigerator. For longer storage, it can be stored in the freezer for up to four months.

In addition to spaghetti, use the marinara sauce with chicken parmesan to use as a great meat sauce or as a dipping sauce for breadsticks.
