Ingredient Notes
The complete recipe quantity and detailed instructions can be found in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Butter: You can use salted butter or salt-free butter. It’s not an issue here. Brown Sugar: Because of its high moisture content, using thin brown sugar will produce soft, chewy cookies. (What we want with this Smartie cookie recipe). Using white sugar will spread the cookies even further, resulting in a flatter and crisper cookie. Eggs: Use large eggs. Vanilla Extract: Pure vanilla extract is a magical ingredient that gives baked goods a deeper and more delicious flavour. Flour: You can use regular versatile flour (regular flour) or an all-purpose gluten-free flour blend. However, please note that Smarties Candies are not gluten-free (see below). Baking Powder: Our inflating agent is to bake powder for this recipe. Smarties Candy: Smarties are candy-coated milk chocolate candies in multiple colors. These smarts aren’t the same smart candies you’ve found in the US. This is a tart, fruity, slightly white tablet. In Canada, we also have those candies, but we call them rockets. If you’re in the US, the perfect alternative to Chocolate Smart is M&M. Chocolate Smart Tea in Canada, UK and Australia contains flour and is not gluten-free. Therefore, M&M is also an excellent gluten-free alternative to Smarty in this recipe. Chocolate Chips: We’ve added milk chocolate chips to give these chocolate smurdy cookies an extra chocolate boost. You can also use white chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, or chocolate chunks if you like.

Step-by-step instructions
Melt the butter and beat it with sugar in a large bowl. Beat eggs and vanilla. Beat flour, baking powder and salt. Fold the smarty and chocolate chips.

Roll the cookie dough into a bowl and place it on the prepared cookie sheet. Bake until light golden brown. Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool them.

Tips and Variations
Melted Butter: I tested this recipe using both soft and melted butter. The soft butter incorporates air into the cookie batter, giving the cookie a fluffy, more cakey texture. Melted butter gives these cookies a dense, fudgey center and crisp edge. This is my preference. Either way, Smarties cookies are delicious. Room Temperature Ingredients: All ingredients at room temperature for best results. They blend more easily and the cookies will have a uniform texture. If you forget to remove the eggs, soak them in warm water for about 5 minutes. Don’t overmix: Mix too much cookie dough and you will get strong, thick cookies. Mix the ingredients until combined. Uniform-sized cookies: Use a tablespoon, cookie dough scoop, or melon baller to divide the cookie dough balls into uniform sizes so that everything is baked at the same time. Leave space: The cookies spread out some, so leave plenty of space between them and allow it. Add something even more clever: It’s still warm, but gently pushes the extra smart down onto the top of each cookie. Storage: Once it’s completely cool, store Smarties cookies in airtight containers on the counter for up to 3 days. To freeze: Transfer fully cooled cookies to a safe container or resealable freezer bag in the freezer. Freeze for up to 3 months.
