Three iconic Mexican cocktails better than a margarita

Why make it

This Paloma cocktail offers refreshing and bright tequila, fresh lime juice and grapefruit soda. The recipe takes just 5 minutes. You can mix the cocktail directly into a glass to make preparation and cleanup very simple.

Imagine this: you’re in a great taqueria and order a bunch of tacos before hitting an elaborate salsa bar when someone asks what you want to drink. Just assuming you’re not looking for beer, the old internal battle continues. The refreshing and fruity cocktails are both very tasty, which is a tough phone.

I love great margaritas, but they can just be hard to make it right. Freshly squeezed citrus fruits are a must-have, perfectly harmonious with tequila, agave or simple syrup, and/or orange liqueur, shaking and blending in with salted edges. A delicious experience requires some commitment.

Palomas, on the other hand, requires only three simple ingredients and is difficult to ruin. So I’m declaring them one of my favourite cocktails. They are sour and sweet enough, cheerful (big bonus) and can be whipped quickly. Enjoy your pool, happy hour or your favorite Mexican food.

Tips for making the perfect Paloma

Over the years I have developed some tips for making my favorite proportions and outstanding Palomas. I’m going to share them with you in one big warning. I have built the perfect Paloma recipe. It may not be yours. Luckily, it’s a very easy drink. You can adjust it to your liking.

I prefer the midrange Reposado Tequila for Paloma. Blanco works well and you don’t need to use super expensive bottles here (I don’t recommend using incredibly cheap ones either, but you do).

The traditional mixer choice is Jaritos. It is easy to find in grocery stores and in Mexican markets and has a very sweet grapefruit flavour. I like cocktails and balanced sweetness bites, so I prefer to use a blender with real grapefruit juice, such as Fever Tree Sparkling Pink Grapefruit or Q Mixer Sparkling Grapefruit. Fever Tree Cans happen to be the perfect amount to make two cocktails. I can find both brands in my local supermarket.

I like to add salt to my cocktails, so I add a pinch of thin salt to the tequila and lime juice and mix in the soda. I also like to rim the glass with salt. Both are completely optional!

Salt glass edges:

If you want a salted edge, cut the rim of a highball or similar glass, then dip the lime and soak it in kosher or sea salt.

Make a cocktail:

Add fresh lime juice and tequila to the glass. Top with ice. Add the soda and stir gently. Serve immediately with lime wedges or grapefruit wedge garnish if necessary.
