Brown Sugar Toast

This brown sugar toast recipe is made from soft, rich sliced bread toasted in a frying pan, topped with butter brown sugar until golden brown and caramelized. It’s a warm and cozy treat that comes together in just a few minutes with three ingredients.

Do you think brown sugar toast is the rich and caramelized cousin of cinnamon toast? That’s very good.

A bite, you’ll get it. The top is sweet, buttery and crispy. The interior remains soft and soft. Perfect toast perfection. This simple recipe turns some simple ingredients into something surprisingly appealing.

Don’t save this just for breakfast. Slicing brown sugar toast along with coffee or tea is an absolute delight. And kids will love it for an after-school snack with a cold glass of milk.

Ingredient Notes

Bread: Shokupan (Japanese Milk Bread) is a soft, slightly sweet white bread that is perfect for this recipe. Its pillow-like texture and richness absorbs a dreamy mixture of brown sugar butter. You can find shokupan in Japanese or Asian markets, but if you can find bread, thick cut soft white bread will do the trick. The best alternative is cala or brioche. And if you have brioche, save a few slices and make the best brioche French toast. Butter: Made with regular salted butter, softened and spreading easier. Margarine or alternative butter spreads do not offer the same rich flavor or caramelization, so I don’t recommend it for this recipe. Brown Sugar: Go with dark brown sugar for the best colour and caramelization.

How to make brown sugar toast

Four images of butter and brown sugar mixtures spread across sliced and toasted breads in frying pans.

Mix the soft butter and brown sugar in a small bowl. Spread the mixture on one side of the slice of bread. Place the buttered sides in a frying pan and spread the top with the remaining mixture. Cook over medium heat on both sides. When brown sugar melts, the surface becomes golden and caramelized. Chill the toast on a wire rack and crunch it.

Provide suggestions

Brown sugar toast is all delicious in itself and on the breakfast plate, but you can also dress up for dessert. Topped with whipped cream and fresh berries in small quantities, warm up a scoop of sauteed apple and vanilla ice cream, or finish with vanilla ice cream and chopped pecans for quick and easy enjoyment.

For a cozy seasonal twist, try pinching cinnamon or pumpkin pie spices into the butter mixture before cooking.
