Will eating slowly help you lose weight?

It takes time for your body to feel full, so it helps to eat slowly. If you finish your meal in a hurry, you may end up eating past your comfort point before your body catches up.

What is mindful eating?

Mindful eating means paying attention while eating. Notice the food, the pace, the taste, and whether or not you’re still hungry. This is the opposite of eating on autopilot in front of the TV, computer, or phone.

How can I stop eating when I’m bored?

Before you eat, pause for a moment and ask, “Are you hungry or looking for something to do?” If you’re feeling bored, try a small reset like a short walk, a glass of water, or a phone call before reaching for food.

Should I keep track of what I eat?

Keeping records is helpful because it makes invisible habits visible. You don’t have to count every calorie. Keeping a quick note of what you ate, when you ate it, and why you ate it will quickly reveal patterns.

Is exercise necessary to lose weight?

Exercise helps, but it doesn’t have to be extreme. Regular physical activity helps burn calories and supports overall health. The CDC notes that activity plays an important role in healthy weight management, along with diet, sleep, and stress management.

Can you lose weight even if you eat dessert?

Yes, but quantity and frequency are important. Eating small desserts intentionally is different than eating cookies all night long. If you want dessert, plate it up, enjoy it, and stop there.

What if I want the number of seconds?

Pause for a few minutes before consuming more food. Ask if they are still hungry or if they just keep going because the food is delicious. If you’re really hungry, reduce the second portion.

Is it better to eat small meals throughout the day?

It depends on the person. Some people do better by eating smaller meals to avoid excessive hunger. Some people prefer a regular three-meal diet. The best pattern is one that prevents you from overeating and one that feels realistic.

Why should you avoid grocery shopping when you’re hungry?

Hunger makes everything seem like a good idea. Shopping after a meal or snack can help you make more sober choices and avoid buying food you don’t plan on eating.

What foods do you want to keep visible in your kitchen?

Keep easier and better options visible, such as fruit, cut vegetables, plain yogurt, water, or simple leftovers. Place snack foods and treats out of sight or in hard-to-reach areas. Your kitchen setup should allow you to make better, and easier, choices.

What is the biggest mistake people make when trying to lose weight?

The biggest mistake is trying to change everything at once. Most people pick one or two easy habits, practice them until they feel normal, and then improve by adding other habits.

When should I talk to my doctor about weight loss?

Consult your health care provider if you have a medical condition, take any medications, have a history of an eating disorder, or plan to make any significant changes to your diet or exercise habits. Common sense practices can help, but they are not a substitute for medical advice.
