If you’re wandering around Christmas in the fridge leftover baked ham from Easter or leftover Christmas, this ham salad recipe is a great way to use it. When I want to breathe new life into that Holiday Ham, it will be my absolute go-to. It’s a quick, flavorful and easy lunch that can be pulled together in minutes.

Best Ham to Use in Ham Salads

You may wonder what the best ham for this recipe is. Essentially, pre-cooked ham or ham steak is a good choice for this recipe. Even Deliham works here as it’s faster and faster in a food processor. Have them slice on the thick side.

What I want to do is give the rest of the food a second life. Therefore, this recipe is a great opportunity to use the remaining ham from the holidays (Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.). If there are sweet glazes, those sweet tastes will come out in the salad. If you don’t want to go through the sweetness, I recommend cutting the part covered with glaze.

Ingredients for ham salad

Here’s what’s in the classic version of this ham salad recipe:

Ham – The remaining ham is the perfect celery – for crunch and fresh yellow onions – add a delicious bite (or swap for a sweet onion if you want). There’s also dill pickle relish work and mayonnaise – creamy base salt that keeps it all together + black pepper

Delicious variations

There are many ham salad varieties there. This makes this recipe really fun and customizable. Feel free to play and make this dish yourself! Here are some ideas to get you started:

Exchange sweet pickles with sweet taste for sweet relish for the sweet version, finely chop the finely chopped eggs using green onions or red onions instead of yellow or sweet eggs.

What can I use besides mayonnaise?

If you’re looking for something a little lighter than a straight mayonnaise, I recommend light sour cream or Grain Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is packed with many nutrients and can be a game changer. Therefore, it is often an innocent alternative to mayonnaise. As long as it tastes, the ham salad with mayonnaise is definitely tasty to cover your fingers. However, plain Greek yogurt adds a refreshing kick to the dish, perfect complementing the smoky ham. Finally, planning to squeeze lemon juice into salads will blend well with Greek yogurt and become more complicated.

How to make ham salad

Everything can be thrown into a large mixing bowl and stirred. This ham mixture has a bit of crunch from celery, a pop of chili peppers with dill pickles, and a creamy base that brings it all together. Keep it classic or customize it with what’s in the fridge. For more information about the complete recipes that include ingredient measurements, see the printable recipe cards at the bottom of this post.

1. Prepare the ingredients

My ham salad recipe consists of ham, celery, dill pickles and onions. And now is the time to prepare those ingredients. Start by measuring and rinsing the vegetables. Get a sharp, clean knife and dice celery in fine, fine pieces. Crispy celery adds a crispy touch to your salad.

Place the ham in a food processor and pulse until mined. Don’t let it go that long. Alternatively, instead of using a food processor, you can wear ham in small chunks.

Next is dill pickles. I like to chop them into small cubes. You can make them bigger to your taste. Dil pickles add a fanatic element to your ham salad and make it refreshing.

Fresh yellow onions are a must for me in this ham salad recipe. A delicious salad with dill pickles is balanced when mixed with mayo or Greek yogurt. I prefer to finely chopped onions into small pieces.

Pro Tip: You can also put all these ingredients into a food processor at once. You have a bit of control over how big the celery and onion pieces will get, but certainly save a lot of chopping!

Pro Tip: If not, add pickled juice, lemon juice, or a splash of white vinegar and blitz again.

2. Mix together

As soon as all the ingredients are prepared, all you need to do is mix it with 4 cups of mayonnaise.

Seasons if necessary. Hams already tend to be quite salty, so try and adjust the seasonings if necessary.

Storage + Create a direction to the destination

Cover well and store in the fridge for up to 5 days!

Can I freeze this ham salad recipe?
Technically yes, but that’s not ideal. Mayo separates after freezing. If you have set up a freeze ham salad, try blending everything except mayonnaise and adding it after thawing.

Can I make this in advance?
yes! It actually tastes better after a few hours in the fridge. Leave it sealed in an airtight container.
