This sausage cheese dip is ready in just 20 minutes. Packed with flavorful Italian sausage, three types of cheese, and flavorful, this dip is perfect for game day, parties, and potlucks.

Sausage cheese dip in a pot

Flavor: Rich and flavorful with a super creamy texture, bold sausage flavor, melty cheese, and just enough acidity to make each bite pleasant and mouth-watering. Skill Level: Beginner-friendly with minimal cooking! Recommended tools: All you need to make this dip is a large skillet with a sturdy spatula or whisk. Recommendation: We love serving this dip with crostini, crackers, tortilla chips, and pretzels because the crunchy, salty flavor pairs perfectly with the creamy dip.

Ingredient memo

Sausage: Use mild or spicy Italian sausage for a rich, savory flavor. Drain well to avoid making the dip oily. Substitute ground beef, chicken, or turkey, but add a little more mustard and Worcestershire to balance the flavor. Cheese: This dip combines processed cheese, cream cheese, and sharp cheddar for a rich, creamy, and perfectly melting dip. Dice the soft cheese before adding it so it melts evenly without much stirring, and wait until you turn off the heat to mix in the sharp cheddar at the end. Variations: Give this sausage cheese dip a spicy, tangy twist by adding diced jalapeños, green chiles, a pinch of cayenne pepper, or a spoonful of salsa. Mix together drained, diced tomatoes and green chiles to make sausage queso dip twists.

Add cheese to beef and onions to make sausage cheese dip

20 minute game plan

Fry the sausage and onions and drain the water. Melt the cheese over medium-low heat, stirring frequently (see below for complete recipe). Add milk and seasonings and mix. Turn off the heat, add cheddar cheese and mix.

Add the cheese and simmer over medium-low heat to prevent it from burning or becoming grainy. To thin the dip, whisk in 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk at a time. This makes it a more “queso-style” chip dip. If the dip seems too oily, stir well, add a spoonful of cream cheese and set over low heat to help mix everything together. Transfer the dip to a small slow cooker and warm, stirring occasionally, until ready for the party.

Store and reheat like new

Cool leftover dip and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. For the best texture, portion and freeze for up to 2 months.

To reheat, if frozen, thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Then heat on low heat on the stove or in the microwave for about 30 seconds, stirring frequently. Add a little milk to make it smooth.
