Place the stick butter in an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish and melt in the oven or microwave.
In a mixing bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Add the buttermilk and mix with a spoon until all ingredients are moistened.
Pour the batter into a baking dish with melted butter and spread it evenly over the pan with a spoon.
