This easy vegetable dip recipe is creamy, flavorful, and the perfect accompaniment to a colorful platter of fresh vegetables. It tastes like the classic party dip you get from a packaged mix, but it’s made from scratch with simple ingredients.

A platter of fresh vegetables and crudités is an easy appetizer that I incorporate into almost every gathering. It’s so great that instead of buying a pack of dip mixes, you can go to your fridge and pantry, gather a few simple ingredients, make this fresh, flavorful, easy vegetable dip, and hit the road.
You may have some key ingredients on hand to make a homemade dip like this. Also, my original French Onion Dip from Scratch is similar to the classic packaged dip, but fresher and less salty.
Ingredient memo

Mayonnaise: The base of the dip, giving it a rich, creamy texture. I like to use olive oil mayonnaise, but you can use any high quality mayonnaise. Light mayonnaise is not recommended for best flavor. Sour cream: Adds acidity and lightens the mayonnaise so the dip isn’t too heavy. Either full-fat or light sour cream will work. I use lights and they are very effective. Lemon: Fresh lemon juice brightens the overall flavor and balances the richness. Dried chopped onions: This is the key to the flavor of a classic vegetable dip. As it sits, it softens and adds texture, adding a milder onion bite that’s more obvious than onion powder. Dill: Fresh dill adds flavor and makes the dip taste fresh. You can substitute the dried version if you wish, but you will use less. Dry seasonings: Add flavor with garlic powder, dried parsley, seasoned salt, and pepper. I use Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, but you can use any similar seasoning blend that includes salt. Adjust the seasoning according to your preference for seasoning the dip.

valerie’s tips
Chill: This dip is best chilled in the refrigerator for at least an hour. The dried onions will soften and the flavors will come together. Taste and adjust: Stir well before serving and adjust with a little lemon juice, salt, and pepper if needed. Control your seasoning: Start with the amount listed and add more to taste. It’s easy to keep this dip well seasoned without making it too salty. If you have fresh dill, use it. Fresh dill adds bright flavor. If you use dried, you will need less (see recipe card for exact amounts). Make it a little lighter: If you want to make it lighter, you can replace some of the sour cream with Greek yogurt. Add more garlic: If you like garlic, add a little more garlic powder or use granulated garlic for extra flavor. Great Chip Dip: This simple dip recipe is just as delicious with potato chips. Always popular with guests!
